Robert Joseph Madden (Bob), 87, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 8, 2017.  He was born in Escanaba, MI; raised in Stillwater, MN.

Bob was born on December 10, 1929, the son of the late Margaret and Joseph Madden.  He was a graduate of St. Thomas College, St. Paul, MN. and served in the Air Force.  Bob was predeceased by his son, Thomas Robert.  He is survived by two brothers, William (Deirdre) of St. Paul, MN and Thomas (Bab-e) of Oceanside, CA.

Bob was dedicated to and is survived by his loving wife of over 65 years, Veronica Rowland Madden; and seven children: Michael J. (Catherine) of Lynchburg, Peter E. (Catherine) of Virginia Beach, Daniel P. of Richmond, Ann B. Dubik (Michael) of Norfolk, Sarah M. Irwin (Michael) of Richmond, John T. (Leslie) of Richmond, Matthew R. (Annette) of Colorado Springs, CO.  Bob was blessed with fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Bob’s career was in the wholesale pharmaceutical industry, beginning with McKesson & Robbins before moving to Lynchburg in 1970 to join Strother Drug Company as Vice President of Sales.  He was active with Holy Cross Catholic Church, an avid golfer, a big UVA sports fan, and a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. In retirement, Bob generously volunteered his time with Meals on Wheels and AARP Tax Preparation.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Home.  A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, with a reception immediately afterwards.  Interment will follow the reception at Holy Cross Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to: Food Pantry, Holy Cross Catholic Church; Meals on Wheels of Greater Lynchburg; or Society of St. Andrews – Big Island, VA.

Bob will remain forever in our hearts and be dearly missed.
