Robert Wesley Kerr, 82, of Lynchburg, Virginia passed away on July 29, 2024. He was the son of the late George Wesley Kerr and Nancy DePriest Kerr of Gladys, VA. He was preceded in death by his grandson Aaron Brumfield and brother Phillip Kerr.
He was born October 22, 1941 in Lynchburg, VA. After serving in the United States Air Force Robert worked at the Lynchburg Foundry before opening up his own business, the Union 76 Station on Lakeside Drive. Wanting to grow his business he moved downtown and formed his first Kerr Tire & Automotive shop in the early 1970's growing into multiple locations including a body shop and salvage yard.
Robert is survived by his children, Nadine Kerr Durbin (David) of Forest, VA, Allan Kerr (Laura) of Memphis, TN, and Debra Kerr of Houston, TX, 4 grandchildren, Tiffany Russell (Sterling), Amber Diamond (Erik), Sarah Brumfield, Emilie Kerr, and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Bonnie Windsor and Judy Palmer.
Robert will be remembered by his family, friends and employees for his selflessness to others, his extraordinary work ethic (sometimes to a fault). He could often be seen picking up cans to recycle, downtown, or in Gladys during his later years in life. He had an engaging smile and was always open to help anyone in need. Robert was definitely a character, often teasing, saying Chop Chop, This Is My Town , or This is America-I Can Do What I Want...all to anyone, and if he had a soft spot it was for children.
In accordance with his wishes, the family will honor Robert with a closed casket. The family will receive family and friends in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 3, 2024, with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery, 5196 East Ferry Road, Gladys, VA 24554. Fellowship to follow.
