Robert Lee “Bobby” Tanner, Jr., of Gladys, VA, went home to be with his lord on Monday, October 2, 2023.
Bobby was born on January 12, 1949, to the late Robert Lee Tanner, Sr. and Delia Dawson Tanner.
After graduating from High School, Bobby joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he proudly served his country in the Vietnam War. He later went on to become a tractor trailer driver before retiring in 2011.
He and his wife, Karen Collins Tanner, had been married for 54 years. He loved his wife and family. In addition to his wife, Karen he is survived by his children, Robert “Gerry” Tanner (Diane) of Concord, VA., Rhonda Cantrell (Greg) of Summerville, S.C., Emily Kennon, Of Gladys, VA., Matthew Tanner (Anna) of Fruitland, ID, and Wesley Tanner (Rachel) of Middle River, MD. He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter; his brother, Ray Tanner; sisters, Kay Guthrie (Jerry), Betty Massie (T.W.) and Lydia Baber and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was a beloved member of his community and never met a stranger. He enjoyed driving and watching NASCAR races.
While we will miss seeing him here on earth, we know he is now whole, and running up and down the streets of Heaven visiting with his Mom and Dad and others who have gone on before him.
Although Bobby’s injuries were not a result of his military service, the care he received from the Veterans Administration afforded him many full and active years with his family, so in lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Wounded Warriors Project or the Alzheimer’s Association.
The celebration of Bobby’s life will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Diamond Hill Presbyterian Church.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
