Robert Manton “Bob” Dean, III, 85, of Shady Grove, Gladys, Va. died on Sunday, March 11, 2018. He was the husband of Katharine “Kit” Barringer Dean.  Bob was born on April 8, 1932 in Syracuse, NY, a son of the late Robert M. Dean, Jr. and the late Emily Sauber Dean.

In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his son, Robert M. Dean, IV and wife, Megan of Falls Church, Va., his daughter, Katharine D. Deacon and husband, Jeff of Concord, NH, his son, William B. Dean and wife, Christine of Minneapolis, Minn., and his daughter, Susan E. Dean of Chevy Chase, MD; his four grandchildren, Heather and Julie Deacon of Concord, NH and Charles and Jake Dean of Minneapolis, Minn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death of his brother, William F. Dean.

Bob was a 1950 graduate of The Haverford School, a 1954 graduate of Dartmouth College and a 1955 graduate of The Tuck School of Business. He also served 30 years in the U. S. Navy, three years of active duty that included time on the USS Rowe and 27 years in the Naval Reserve where he attained the rank of Captain.

Bob was employed 10 years with Scott Paper Company and 20 years with the Hartford Insurance Group in the employee relations department.

Wherever he lived, Bob was always active in the civil affairs of the community. He was a Little League Coach in Simsbury, CT for many years.  After Bob and Kit moved to Shady Grove in 1988, to fulfill their life-long dream of owning and operating a farm, Bob served on the Board of the Farm Bureau, was a member of the Campbell County Cattleman’s Association and was a 25 year member of the Brookneal Lions Club where he served as President on several occasions.  Bob also served as a Trustee of Red Hill, Patrick Henry’s last home and burial place and was honored with a luncheon upon his retirement from the Board.

Bob served as an Elder and Sunday School Teacher at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Simsbury, CT and again at Diamond Hill Presbyterian Church where he had also served as Clerk of Session.

Bob was a friendly, outgoing person who never met a stranger. He loved his family and friends, his church, his farm and his country.

A memorial service celebrating Bob’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at Diamond Hill Presbyterian Church, Gladys, Va. with the Rev. Christy Mitchell officiating. The family will receive friends at a reception in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.

Burial will take place at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield, Mass.
