Robert Maurice “Bobby” Middleton, Jr., 81, of Moneta, Va., passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 24, 2023.
Bobby was born in Lynchburg, Va., to the late Robert Maurice Middleton, Sr., and Virginia Harris Middleton. He graduated from Boonsboro High School in Lynchburg, Va.
After finishing school, Bobby worked as a banker in his hometown of Lynchburg. He later went into real estate and became a broker. He ran Bernard’s Realty Company at his beloved Smith Mountain Lake for most of his career.
Bobby loved spending time with family and friends. He was enthusiastic about many things and, like his father, was a very talented mechanic. Over the years, he skied both water and snow, rode motorcycles, operated both power and sail boats, was even one of the Virginia Dare Captains, drove sports cars and as everyone knows, flew airplanes.
Flying was his greatest passion; he began flying in 1970 and went on to fly just about every kind of plane. He loved to fly everything from vintage to aerobatic to multiengine to homebuilt, and he had a natural talent for flying. He introduced countless people to aviation with rides in his planes, many of whom became pilots.
Bobby was preceded in death by his younger brother William ‘Billy” Andrew Middleton. He is survived by his sister, Jane Olivia Middleton and brother-in-law, Robert Weisenbeck of Punta Gorda, FL; sister-in-law, Danna Middleton of Fredericksburg, Va., son, Robert Middleton III and daughter-in-law, Cheryl of Forest, Va., daughter, Lynn Rys and son-in-law, Flip of Frisco, CO; grandson, Robert Parker Middleton, wife Mikayla, of Forest, VA, and granddaughters, Alaina Elizabeth French, husband, Josh of Forest, Va., Kyla Rys of Brooklyn, NY and great-grandson, Robert Henry Middleton.
The family will privately celebrate Bobby’s life at a later date.
