Robert P. Jones departed this life peacefully, at Lynchburg General Hospital on February 1, 2022. He was born on February 2, 1942, to the late James Thomas and Marion Royal Jones, in Campbell County, (Clarkstown) Va. He was preceded in death by his wife Peggy Ann Stratton Jones and son Robert Anthony Jones.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory, his children; Linda (Steve) Harsley, Gregory (Clara) Stratton, James (Ruby) Jones, Tammie (Leon) Watkins, and Lester Jones, and his 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and two great- great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
He served in the United States Navy on the Aircraft carrier USS ESSEX as an air traffic controller during the Vietnam Era. He was the first African American bus driver for the Lynchburg Transit company, and he was also a bus driver for the Campbell County School System. He was employed with Griffin Pipe for 23 years. He was a member of St. James CME Church. Robert was also very fond of a different variety of music, but Motown was his favorite.
A Celebration of life will be held on February 5, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg Va. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Clarkstown Cemetery.
