Robert S. Bell, 59, of Lynchburg, beloved brother, friend, and husband died unexpectedly April 26, 2014.
Rob was born and raised in Cambridge NY, a son of the late Andrew A. and Dorothy Reynolds Bell. A graduate of Cambridge Central School, Rob began his career in construction at Cambridge Lumber Company and remained in the field as a skilled builder his entire life. He worked for over 35 years in Greensboro, NC and Lynchburg areas. Many of those years working with his lifelong friend Bill Dwyer.
In addition to his parents, Rob was predeceased by his older brothers Alan and Theodore, along with his nephews Alan and Nathan Bell.
Rob is survived by his devoted and loving wife Jo Guthrie Bell of Lynchburg. He leaves behind four brothers: Bruce (Beth), Peter (Valerie), James (Karen), and Philip (Mollie), and two sisters: Sylvia (Thomas) Parsley and Virginia (Domenic) D’Andrea, sisters-in-law: Bege Stinchfield, Sue Ford, and Marsha Glass, brothers-in-law: Bobby and Tommy Guthrie and Mother-in-law, Leola Guthrie.
Rob was an avid hunter with several trophies to his credit, he enjoyed fishing and being out in the backwoods and trails of Virginia, the Blue Mountains of North Carolina and the Adirondack Mountains of New York. He was especially fond of the family’s hunting cabin “Inman.†Many fond memories remain of his adventures there including rescuing a lost hunter who had strayed far into the wilderness and, at another time, going out late in harsh weather to bring his lost brother back down the trail.
Rob was a skilled archer having won many sporting competitions. He also loved surf fishing along the Caroline coast, enjoying the days catch with his close friends around the fire in the evening
A skilled musician and vocalist, Rob was selected for all county band as a soloist. His love for playing the drums endured as he played in the Cambridge Band whenever he visited usually during the fourth of July. He was a former member of the Racing City Chorus of Saratoga Springs.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg, the family will receive friends 30 minutes prior.
