Robert Schmidt

May 1, 1939 — April 24, 2025

Robert Eugene Schmidt, 85, passed away on April 24, 2025, at the Davis and McDaniel Veterans Care Center.

Born on May 1, 1939, in New London, Connecticut, Bob was the son of the late Maximillian Schmidt and Elizabeth Berry. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and later earned a master’s degree from George Washington University.

Bob served with honor in the United States Navy, completing 10 years of active duty followed by 10 years in the Naval Reserves, retiring with the rank of Commander. During the Vietnam War, he led two river boat bases and earned the respect of those who served with him.

After his military service, Bob relocated to Lynchburg, Virginia, where he worked for Babcock & Wilcox for two decades, including four years abroad in Germany with Babcock Brown Boveri. He later continued his career with Ericsson until his retirement.

A lifelong aviation enthusiast, Bob found great joy in flight. He was both a pilot and an instructor with Virginia Aviation, sharing his passion and expertise with others. His love for the skies was matched by his love for the sea—while at the Naval Academy, he was the skipper of a yawl and sailed in competitive races from Newport, Rhode Island, to Bermuda.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia Hart Schmidt; his children, Robert Schmidt (Shelly) of Lutz, FL, William Schmidt (Lisa) of Leesburg, VA, and Suzanne Ferguson (Jason) of Lynchburg, VA; his sister, Elizabeth Morrison; and his eleven grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy.

A life of service, integrity, and adventure defined Bob Schmidt. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
