Robert Walter Massie, Jr., of Lynchburg died at his home surrounded by his family, Sunday January 25, 2015. He was the loving husband of Lorraine
Bagby Massie for over 59 years.
Bob was born December 5, 1929 in Oak Hill, West Virginia, a son of the
late Robert W. Massie, Sr. and the late Mabel Gunter Massie. He was a
graduate of Amherst County High School and was a member of the Virginia Tech class of 1952 where he was a four year member of the Highty-Tighties marching band.
He had many interests which included genealogy and music, especially opera. As a boy, spending summers at the family farm in Virginia, he taught himself to play the piano by ear. Bob’s early love of opera began when his aunt sent record albums to the farm for their enjoyment, and in the 1940’s this was one of his few forms of entertainment. He loved restoring antique automobiles, the first of which was a 1925 Model T he bought for five dollars at the age of 15. He owned several others including a 1919 Model T that he built from parts. Bob’s finest was his 1925 Packard that he owned for 47 years. In fact, he was a skilled craftsman at anything he set his mind to, which included creating beautiful architectural features to his family’s homes.
Bob’s family was the most important thing in his life. In addition to his wife he is survived by his children: Robert W. Massie, III, and wife Ellen of Atlanta, GA, Martha Jane Massie and George Taliaferro Massie both of Charlottesville, two grandchildren: Augusta McCauley Massie and Robert W. Massie, IV both of Atlanta, GA, three sisters: Elizabeth M. Cummings and husband, Tom of Atlanta, GA, Page M. McMullin of Boca Raton, FL, and Cynthia M. Turoff and her husband Bob of Cashiers, NC and sister-in-law Marilyn Massie of Kingsport, TN.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Richard Taliaferro Massie.
He retired from B & W Naval Nuclear Fuel Division after 29 years.
