Robert Withers Massie III passed away on Monday, October 26, 2015 at his home in Lynchburg.
He was born September 16, 1927 at Lone Jack Farm in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was the son of Robert Withers Massie Jr. and Wyatt McKinnon Massie of Red Hill, NC. He graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1945 and Virginia Military Institute as a member of the class of 1949B. He honorably served our country in two tours of duty, the first in 1945 during World War II as part of the 82nd Airborne and again from 1950-1952 in the 27th Infantry in Korea.
In October, 1958 he married Anne (Susie) Duval Miller of Coral Gables, Florida and settled in Lynchburg to raise a family. He worked with his father, Robert W. Massie, Jr. at Lone Jack Limestone, Inc. in Glasgow, Virginia. After his father’s death, he took over as owner and president of the company, which operates a limestone quarry, an asphalt plant and Buena Vista Ready Mix.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter; Robert W. Massie of Fairfax, Virginia, Richard M. Massie of Lynchburg, and Margaret D Massie of Virginia Beach, along with four grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at their home at 1515 Lexington Dr. between 4 pm and 7 pm on Thursday, October 29. A graveside service will be held at the Presbyterian Cemetery at 2020 Grace Street in Lynchburg at 11am on Friday, October 30 followed by a family gathering at the home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Robert W. Massie III to the American Cancer Society or Virginia Military Institute.
