Born on October 13, 1936, in Dayton, OH, he was preceded in death by his father, Russell Frank Avey, and his mother, Helen Avey Knapp.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Doninne Louise Soult Avey of Lynchburg, three children: April Avey Veres and her husband Joe of Forest, Susan Avey Scott of Fuquay-Varina, NC, Russell Donald Avey of Lynchburg; his sister, Nancy Tolman and her husband Wallace of Woodbridge; his four grandchildren: Joseph Russell Veres and his wife Lily of Forest, Kyle Brandon Veres and his wife Elizabeth of Chattanooga, TN, Savanah Gracie Scott and Marina Lindsey Scott of Fuquay-Varina, NC; his two great-grandsons: Hudson Joseph Veres and Grayson Andrew Veres of Forest, and many nieces, a nephew, and other loved ones.

Jerry served in the U.S. Air Force where he was a mechanic on Air Force One. Later, he started working as a technical service rep for National Cash Register and then opened his own business in the area of sales and service for 35 years. He was an active member of Leesville Road Baptist Church, where he served many years as a Sunday School teacher and in other ministries. In his later years he volunteered his time teaching English to foreign students and their families in the Lynchburg area. He is well known for his dry humor, which always made his grandkids laugh, simply because there was no other option after he told his jokes. He will be missed, but his family takes comfort knowing that Jerry knew Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and that they will be reunited with him one day.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg.

A Celebration of Jerry’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 23, 2016 at Leesville Road Baptist Church with Dr. Carl Diemer, Rev. Kevin Brooks, and Rev. Joe Veres officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
