Roland J. Hayes, Jr. was called to rest on Saturday, September 7, 2019. He was born September 12, 1954 in the Bronx, New York. He was the son of the late Roland J. Hayes, Sr. and Arnetha Pinn Hayes, who survives.
He joined First Baptist Church of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, New York at an early age. When his parents moved the family to Lynchburg, he joined Brookville Baptist Church
He graduated from E.C. Glass High School, Class of 1973. He attended Norfolk State University and National Business College. Early in his career he was a Lynchburg Firefighter. He worked for his father at Forest Hills Exxon and Hayes Car Care. He worked for Alliance for Families and Children and lastly at the City of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation. He was a member of the Caballera Men’s Social Club. He was an avid New York Jets fan.
Roland leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 29 years, Karen; twin sons, Roland III and Ronald; one brother, Maurice (Bernadine); one sister, Annette (Jimmie); four nephews, Maurice, II (Regina), Derek (June), Marcus (Olivia), and Terrence; godchildren, Earl, Brendalyn, Simone, Taquana, and Cherra; two great-nieces, Mya and Denise; eight aunts, Doris Woodson, Mammie Hewitt, Constance Pinn, Lolita Pinn, Eunice Epps, Ruby Hayes, Myra Hayes, Margaret Hayes; mother and father-in-law, Franklin and Ella Mae Monroe; and a host of devoted cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends Friday, September 13, 2019 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A celebration of Roland’s life will be held Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Thomas Road Baptist Church in the Pate Chapel, 701 Mountain View Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502.
He will lie in repose one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.
