Ronnie C. Burks, 71, of Lynchburg passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2013 after a brief illness.
Born on April 2, 1941, he was the son of the late Joseph Burks and the late Irene Allor. He was also preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ferguson, who raised him and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Burks. Surviving him are his wife of 47 years, Cathy B. Burks; a daughter, Leslie Burks Markham and special son-in-law, Lee Markham; half sisters, Juanita, Evelyn, and MaryEllen along with numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins. In addition to the family, he is also survived by a very good friend, Talmadge Lipscomb and a wonderful neighbor, Annette Hudson. Last but not least his cat, Charlie, granddog, Kasey and grandcats, Buffy and Fluffy, all of whom he loved very much.
Ronnie was retired from Weyerhaeuser Paper Company after 40 years service. In his earlier years, he enjoyed running and was a frequent participant in the Virginia Ten Miler and several marathons. He also loved baseball, particularly the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals, which he would go to see during Spring Training every year. His favorite pastime was planting a garden and watching \"stuff\" grow and then giving most of what he raised to friends. He was interested in The Civil War, especially Gettysburg which he visited quite often.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, March 7, 2013 in the chapel at Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory, Lynchburg, by Pastor Dwight Weaver. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
