Roy James Johnson, 88, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, January 23, 2011, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband for forty years of the late Janice Harris Johnson.
Born August 13, 1922, in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Lula Ann Millner Johnson and Will Henry Johnson.
Roy was a member of Beulah Baptist Church when he died. He had served as Deacon, Visitation Director, Training Union teacher and in many other areas in the life of the churches he attended.
He served in the Army during World War II. When he returned from the war, he worked for Schenkel\"™s Greenhouse for 34 years and retired in 1987.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Annie New, Virginia Stanley and Thelma Campbell.
He is survived by a daughter, Ann J. Knight and her husband, Frank, of Lynchburg; a son, Lee Johnson and his wife, Rhonda, of Forest; three granddaughters, Savannah Cook and husband, David, Carmen Johnson and Jenni Knight; two brothers, Thornal Johnson of Virginia Beach and Pete Johnson of Lynchburg; two sisters, Frances Camden and Bettie Maddox and husband, Monty, all of Lynchburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 \"" 8:30 PM on Thursday, January 27, 2011, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.
The Reverend Maurice McCarthy, pastor of Beulah Baptist Church, will conduct the memorial service at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 28, 2011, at Tharp Funeral Home.
