Ruby Doris Rice Hamilton

Ruby Doris Rice Hamilton passed away peacefully on Monday, July 12, 2010, at Lynchburg General Hospital after a short battle with cancer, surrounded by her family.

Ruby was preceded in death by her dear husband of 67 years, Edward Harvey Hamilton, her brother Wilber E. Rice, her sister Martha A. Taylor, and her granddaughter Wendy Faith Hamilton.

She is survived by a large and loving family.  Her four children are Judith Elaine Hamilton of Forest, Harvey Lee Hamilton and wife, Violet, of Forest, James Edward Hamilton and wife, Kris Mayeda, of Las Vegas, and Patricia Ann Hooper and husband, Larry, of Forest.

She is also survived by brothers S. Preston Rice of Haymarket and Ben Rice of Evington, and sisters Ernestine Garwood of Pulaski, Mildred Fariss of Lynchburg, and Mary Bondurant of Lynchburg.

Always the matriarch of a devoted family, Ruby is also survived by five grandchildren: Mark Hamilton of Wytheville, Jackie Gorman and husband, Ash, of Lynchburg, Tim Hamilton and wife, Laura, of Lynchburg, Krista Ragland and husband, Rob, of Sandy Hook, and Stephanie Hooper of Forest; eight lively great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Ruby was born November 23, 1921, the daughter of the late Silas P. Rice and Josephine F. Rice, in Glade Hill, Virginia.

Grandma, as she was affectionately called, always placed family foremost in her life.  Some of the many highlights of her life included building each of their homes together by hand with her husband, Ed; many wonderful times spent with sisters and brothers relaxing and playing music; the annual family trips to Nags Head with her children to watch the surf, and helping to care for her five grandchildren as they grew up.

Ruby was a loyal employee of General Electric for decades.  She was a member of Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church and an affiliate of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Virginia Memorial Park with the Reverend Jim Moon officiating.  The family will then receive friends at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, from 3:00 to 4:00 PM.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family, 434-237-9424.
