Ruby Lois Franklin Foster was born on March 21, 1919 in Amherst County and passed away at her home in Elon on August 29, 2015. Lois’ parents were Robert “Abner” Franklin and Lena Rieves Pryor Franklin. She was married for 42 years to the late Joe W. Foster. Her nine siblings preceded her in death: Pauline, Emma, Arthur, Herbert, Raymond, Doris, Elsie, Edward and Hesper. Grandson Gregg Hundley Connelly and son-in-law Johnny Connelly also preceded her in death.
Lois is survived by her three daughters, eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and extended family and friends. Her daughters are Helen Foster Connelly, bonnie foster dayton (Tim), and Nancy Foster. Her grandchildren are Danny Connelly (Sharon), Cheryl Mays (Danny), Beth Pingley (Greg), Joe Connelly, Robyn Dayton (Evan Hughes), Randi Jennings (Coles), Steven Dayton (Natalie Brown), and Taylor Dayton. Great-grandchildren are Chris and Alex Connelly, Josh Mays (Helen), Jared and Logan Pingley, Damian and Finley Dayton-Hughes, and Blake and Jordan Jennings. Great-great grandchildren are Sophie Pritchett and Layla Mays.
Many people have been blessed to experience life with Lois and those who remain can try to be some of who she was for others. Attempting to convey who Lois was with words is inadequate, but words are all we have: understanding children, “good cooker” at Elon Elementary, gardening, birds, flowers, teaching Sunday School, example, mentor, Bible School, Senior Adult Ladies, WMU, pound cakes, hours spent watching children at the pool and shelling butter beans, tomatoes, washing clothes, reading herself to sleep, painting walls, mowing grass, visiting shut-ins, Rook, playing ball, berry picking, black berry roll, jams and jelly, music, dancing, puzzles, tobacco worms, Red Hill School, homemade ice cream for the Lawn Party, croquet, string beans, canning and freezing, dressing up for Halloween, Foster’s Cash Store, daughter, sister, friend, wife, Mom, Mama, Grandma, Grum, Great-Grandma Lois, Old Horse, Aunt Lois, Miss Lois, Miss Elsie, Billy Graham crusades, red mud, Lawrence Welk, Pleasant View, Naola, Glasgow, Baltimore, Hyattsville, accepting, compassionate, fun-loving, easy-to-laugh, witty, funny, slow-to-anger, beautiful, faithful to her church and community, determined, hero, rock, love, sweet, LOIS.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2015 at Elon Baptist Church. A celebration of Lois’ life will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at Elon Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Tyree officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
