Ruby (Mopsy) Hosey Esteppe went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at Westminster Canterbury surrounded by those who loved her most. She was the devoted wife of the late Lon Jackson (Jack) Esteppe.
Born on March 19, 1925, in Sutton, WV, she was the daughter of Hanson and Ida Hosey who preceded her in death, as well as her brother Herb, and sisters Odie, Iva and Ada.
She attended Marshall University where she was a cheerleader and studied phlebotomy. It was there she met the love of her life and her dancing partner for the next 65 years. It was at Marshall that Jack endearingly nicknamed her “Mopsy” and they married in August, 1946.
In 1966 they moved to Lynchburg and established Esteppe Oldsmobile which later became Esteppe Oldsmobile-Nissan. Jack ran the business while Mopsy saw to the personal side of the company employees and their families. The Lord blessed their business until retirement in 1986.
Mopsy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was her greatest joy. She was a member of First Baptist Church and Heritage Baptist Church. Her compassion and generosity enriched many lives through the many hours spent volunteering with the VA Baptist Hospital Auxiliary. Mopsy was an avid golfer at both Oakwood and Boonsboro Country Clubs and served on the board of the Ladies’ Golf Association at Boonsboro.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her two daughters, Nancy Esteppe Ellis (Sid) of Va. Beach, and Jackie Esteppe Mitchell of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Traci Ellis Angell (Steve) of Shreveport, LA., Todd Esteppe Ellis (Kelly) of Va. Beach, Karen Mitchell of Richmond and Amanda Mitchell (Dan) of Lynchburg; and nine great-grandchildren, Jordon Mitchell, Hannah Angell, Sarah Angell, Leah Angell, Hayden Mitchell, Joshua Angell, Grant Ellis, Graham Ellis and Owen Mitchell.
The family would like to thank the 5th Floor Hearthside Staff for their wonderful care, and a very special thanks to Marilyn Roopnarine and Candice Teetee for the love they gave so freely to our mother.
Visitation will take place Thursday, January 19, 2017, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. There will be a private family burial at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Westminster Canterbury on Friday, January 20, 2017, at 1:00 P.M., officiated by her grandson Pastor Todd Ellis. A reception will follow in the Hume Room.
In lieu of flowers, Mopsy asks that contributions be made to the Missions Fund at Heritage Baptist church, 219 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24502.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
