On May 28, 2015, Russell M. Childress of 6848 Virginia Byway, Bedford, Virginia, passed away after a lengthy period of declining health.
He was born on October 13, 1914, in Callaway, Va., to the late James Henry and Ida Webster Childress. He was a sixty plus year member of the Bedford, VA Post No. 54 of the American Legion, and a long-time member of the Ephesus United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, Russell was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-eight years, Laura T. Childress; one brother, and two sisters.
As well as several cousins, Mr. Childress is survived by one son, Warren and his wife, Linda; and one special grandson, William.
Mr. Childress was a veteran of World War II, having served with 563rd AAA Battalion of the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations. Most notably, he participated in the Battle of the Bulge, the Defense of the Remagen Bridgehead, and the Final Allied Force’s Thrust into Germany. He completed his military service as a military policeman, serving in occupied Germany.
Russell owned and operated an electrical/plumbing business, serving the Town of Bedford and Bedford County for over fifty years. He thoroughly enjoyed serving his many faithful customers.
The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford. A service celebrating Russell’s life will take place immediately following the visitation at 2 p.m. in Tharp Funeral Home’s Bedford Chapel with Rev. Jerry Viemeister and Rev. George Harris officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post #16 and the Army National Guard.
The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Green Assisted Living of Lynchburg and Seven Hills Hospice for their outstanding care of Mr. Childress during his last days. A special thanks are also extended to several healthcare professionals who cared for Mr. Childress at home prior to his entering assisted living.
