Russell Walter Busch Russell Busch, born July 29, 1920, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, died early Sunday morning, August 31, 2014, at the Westminster Canterbury Home in Lynchburg, Virginia. A resident of Westminster Canterbury for the past twenty years, he received its Volunteer of the Year Award in 2001, and along with a small group of fellow residents, hand-carved the facilities signature carousel horse, displayed above the entrance door. Mr. Busch was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving in World War II, and again when recalled to duty for the Korean Conflict in 1950. His entire working career was spent with United States Steel Corporation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from which he retired in 1982. An educator at the company’s Homestead Works, he was recognized by Iota Lambda Sigma, a national honor society for exceptional leaders in workforce development. Mr. Busch had a lifelong commitment to community service. In addition to his efforts at Westminster Canterbury, he completed more than 500 hours of volunteer service at Virginia Baptist Hospital, had been a scoutmaster, was recognized for his service to the Bedford City/County Museum, and served multiple terms on the vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Bedford. A Life Member of East McKeesport Lodge No. 765, he received the Fifty-Year Veterans Emblem of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Pennsylvania on September 15, 2004. He was also a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and a Life Member of Syria Temple, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mr. Busch is survived by his wife of 74 years, Sarah Force Busch, who continues to reside at Westminster Canterbury; a son: the Rev. Dr. Glenn Busch and wife Kathleen of Lynchburg; two grandchildren: Matthew Busch and wife Camille, of Winston Salem, North Carolina, and Lauren Duckworth and husband Darren, of Nashville, Tennessee; and two great grandchildren: James and Matthew Duckworth, both of Nashville. A funeral service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Bedford, on Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at 2 p.m. with reception to follow in the parish hall.
