Ruth Ann Edwards

Ruth Ann Edwards was born in Fairmont, WV on January 28, 1920 to Gladys Ferguson Poling and Clyde Poling. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Emlyn Reese Edwards, (who died at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg in 2003).

She is survived by her daughter, Jean Edwards of Lafayette, LA; son Thomas Edwards and his wife, Terry Galen, and granddaughter Meera Edwards of Moab, UT; and grandson Brendan Edwards of Denver, CO.

Ruth Ann grew up in a loving home with her parents, her aunt Ruth Ferguson, and her older sister Jean who died suddenly at the age of 14. Educated in public schools, Ruth Ann received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Music from Fairmont State College, and a Masters degree in Library Science from the University of Maryland in College Park.

During Mr. Edward\"™s career as Professor of Fine Arts at Wilson College, the family home was Chambersburg, PA. It was Mrs. Edwards\"™ career as a librarian that brought the couple to Lynchburg in 1979, where she served at Lipscomb Library at Randolph Macon Women\"™s College, retiring as Librarian Emerita in 1993. Her library career included appointments to Bowie State College, Bowie, MD; Director of John Stewart Memorial Library, Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA; Apple Library of Hood College, Frederick, MD.

Ruth Ann was active in church choirs, music and theater, and was a vibrant and contributing member of the Westminster Canterbury community for 15 years. An avid supporter of women\"™s education, she was elected an honorary member of the Randolph Macon Women\"™s College Alumnae Association in 1994. She will be sadly missed by her myriad of friends and extended family, including nieces: Nancy Noonan of Richmond, VA, Nancy Ellis of Bonita Springs, FL, Carolyn Glynn of Caldwell, NJ, and nephews Jeffrey Ellis of Houston, TX, and Raymond Ellis of Flintstone, GA.

A celebration of Ruth Ann\"™s life will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday, October 25, 2012 in The Commons at Westminster Canterbury.
