Ruth Brenig, 94, of Lynchburg, Va., passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. She was born on July 22, 1929, in Zurich, Switzerland to the late Rudolph and Trudy Gossweiler.
In 1949, while waiting for a streetcar with a pretty smile on her face, a young student, Theo (now Ted), who was also waiting there, began talking to her. They ended up going to a park together and married six years later. They had two children, Viviane and Daniel.
They moved to Lynchburg in 1961 for Ted's new job. Ruth perfected her English by watching cartoons with her children. She was known for her fun personality, youthful appearance, excellent cooking and love of Swiss chocolate. She spent many happy years as a wife, mother and homemaker and also enjoyed knitting, reading, shopping and doing crosswords. She travelled extensively with Ted, visiting Russia, China, Israel, and throughout Europe, returning to Switzerland many times to visit family. She especially enjoyed cruises.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Sonja.
She is survived by her husband Ted, children Viviane, Daniel (Lynn), granddaughter Esther, sister Renate, and many nieces and nephews, in both Switzerland and the United States, and several close friends.
Funeral services will be conducted by Rabbi Harley Karz-Wagman at Agudath Shalom Synagogue at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024, this will be followed by interment at Beth Joseph Cemetery in Madison Heights and a reception at the Synagogue afterwards.
