Ruth Elizabeth Hart Butler, 94, died Thursday, September 26, 2013, at Halcyon Hospice House in Atlanta, GA. Ruth was born January 12, 1919, in Waycross, GA, the daughter of Leon Eugene Hart, Sr. and Georgia May (Tubbs) Hart.
Funeral services for Ruth Hart Butler will be held 12:00 Noon, Thursday, October 3, 2013 under the direction of Tharp Funeral Home of Bedford, VA in their Chapel. Pastor Chad Beck of Cove UMC will officiate. Burial will immediately follow at Virginia Memorial Park in Forest, VA where Ruth will be laid to rest next to her predeceased husband, the Rev. Charles Redden Butler, Jr. A Memorial Service in celebration of Ruth's life will be held in her honor at Faith Chapel in Huntsville, AL on Friday, October 4, 2013 at 3:00 PM.
Ruth Elizabeth Hart Butler grew up in Rocky Mount, NC, where her father worked for the Atlantic/Seaboard Coastline Railroad. Ruth graduated from High School in Rocky Mount and then attended Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, NC where she received a Bachelor\"™s Degree in Education in 1940. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Religious Education at the Presbyterian School for Lay Workers in Richmond, VA in 1942 and became a Director of Christian Education.
Ruth married Charles Redden Butler, Jr. on December 11, 1943 in Lebanon, OR. Charles was born in Lynchburg, VA on September 28, 1917. He received his Master of Divinity from Columbia Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA in 1947. After serving in pastorates in the United States, they moved to Brazil in 1950 as Evangelistic Missionaries with the Presbyterian Church and served there for the next five years. Ruth worked alongside her husband in ministry by leading the choir and playing as well as teaching the piano and organ. She always enjoyed music and singing hymns of the church. She also home schooled their children while in Brazil. After returning to the United States, they continued in ministry and then settled in Atlanta, GA where Ruth became a school teacher for many years. In 1970 they moved to Zephyrhills, FL where Ruth continued teaching until they returned to Brazil as missionaries with an independent missionary society in 1972. They remained in Brazil for many years before returning to live in the United States and eventually making their home permanently in Huntsville, AL in 1984. Ruth returned to teaching for a time and then filled her days enjoying the things she loved most: gardening, bird watching, reading, church work, ministry to children, and enjoying time with her husband and family. She was a long-time member of Faith Chapel in Huntsville, AL. Charles preceded Ruth in death on December 23, 2000 just days after celebrating their 57th wedding anniversary. Ruth moved to Roswell, GA in August of 2013 where she was under the care of her daughters and Hospice until her passing. She lived a long and happy life serving God and being faithful to Him. She was an example to all who knew her and never missed an opportunity to share about her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She will be sorely missed.
Ruth is survived by her five children: Sarah Jean Butler Davila of Atlanta, GA and former son-in-law & wife Manuel & Cynthia Davila; Georgia Butler Cobb of Roswell, GA; Nancy Davis Butler of Huntsville, AL (recently relocated to Roswell, GA); Charles Redden Butler, III and Frank Leonard of Hyattsville, MD; Ruth Elizabeth \"Betsy\" Butler Lambe and husband Paul Lambe of Broken Arrow, OK as well as by her eight grandchildren and their spouses: Maria and husband Bo, Andree, Nick, Ruth Elizabeth and husband Hernan, Jonathan, Geoffrey & fiancée Larissa Spurling, Christopher and wife Beth, Andrew and wife Andrea; and also by her seven great-granddaughters: Hannah, Rachel, Elena, Sylvia, Nadia, Valentina, and Mariana.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles; her brother, Leon Eugene \"Gene\" Hart, Jr.; her former son-in-law John David Cobb; and her grandsons, Manuel Enrique Davila, Jr. and Duncan Bell Davila.
