Ruth Louise Scott Glass, 89, of Lynchburg, Virginia, died Saturday, March 16, 2013. She was the widow of the late Carter Glass III, who died in 1989. Born on November 4, 1923, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of Charles Edward Scott and Angela Larsen Scott. She was preceded in death by her brother, Albert Charles Scott.
After spending her youth in Detroit, Michigan, Ruth moved with her family to Amherst County in the early 1940s. She attended Randolph Macon Women\"™s College and in 1949 married her husband, who was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. She was an active member throughout her life of a number of civic organizations in Lynchburg. An avid reader of historical works, Ruth was a docent for more than 25 years at Thomas Jefferson\"™s Poplar Forest and more recently was a volunteer at the Lynchburg Museum and the Old City Cemetery. She was a member of St. John\"™s Episcopal Church.
She is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Glass and Kimberly Stone Glass of Ruckersville, Virginia, Scott Glass and Alice Marshall Glass of Lynchburg, and Carter Glass IV and Genya Waters Glass of Richmond, Virginia; grandchildren, Robert Brian Glass, Geoffrey Byron Glass, Austin Lee Glass, Taylor Marshall Glass, Alexandra Claire Glass, Meghan Glass Hughes, Katherine Carter Glass, Matthew Helms, Ashton Bratton, and Sarah Helms-Smith; six great-grandchildren; and a niece, Ginnylee Slagle.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, in Lynchburg. A funeral service will be held at Spring Hill Cemetery on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 11:00 am with the Reverend William J. Watson, III officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Corporation for Jefferson's Poplar Forest, The Thomas Jefferson Foundation, Inc., St. John\"™s Episcopal Church, or Mount Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union.
