Sadie Jane Walker Tharp

Sadie Jane Walker Tharp, 97, of Bedford died Saturday, January 11, 2014. She was born in Richmond, Virginia on October 29, 1916 a daughter of the late Robert Otey Walker, Sr. and Kate Freeman Walker both originally of Bedford County.

Sadie Jane was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and the Pan American Business College both of Richmond. Upon graduation, she was employed as Executive Secretary to Webster S. Rhoads, President of Miller and Rhoads Department Store, Richmond.

On June 5, 1943, she married Glenn W. Tharp and subsequently moved to Bedford. She and her husband purchased majority interest in M.P. Carder Company Inc., Funeral Directors, now Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory. She was active in the business and served as Corporate Secretary and Treasurer until her retirement in 1996.

Sadie Jane was a devoted member of Main Street United Methodist Church where she had served as church secretary and was active on numerous committees. She took great pride and accomplishment in being a member of the Building Committee that designed and built the current sanctuary. Active in community affairs, she served from 1974 \"" 1977 as Regent of the Peaks of Otter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was instrumental in the fact finding, editing, and publishing of \"Echoes of Old Liberty\" in 1976. She was a member of the Bedford Historical Society, the Friday Book Club and served as a docent at Thomas Jefferson\"™s Poplar Forest. In addition to her husband of 53 years, her brother, Robert Otey Walker, Jr., preceded her in death.

Sadie Jane will be remembered in her community as a gracious lady, enthusiastic community leader, philanthropist, and a supporter of the highest personal principles. She was known to always be immaculately dressed and no one ever saw a single hair out of place.

Sadie Jane leaves to follow her inspiration, her son, Willard D. \"Skip\" Tharp of Bedford, her devoted grandson, Christopher Freeman Tharp and his wife, Sarah Garst Glass of Lynchburg; her ever-entertaining great-grandsons, John Freeman Tharp and Theodore Richard Tharp. Also her best friends, Shelby Carter, Janie Inge, and Ruby Wade.

A celebration of Sadie Jane\"™s life will be conducted at 11 AM, Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Main Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Bart Weakley officiating. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. She will be laid to rest beside her mother and husband in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM, Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford. Arrangements by Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford, (540) 586-3443.
