Sallie Adams Hughes

Sallie Adams Hughes died on Tuesday afternoon, November 15, 2011 at Lynchburg General Hospital after a brief illness. She was born on Forest Road, then Campbell County, on February 19, 1927. She was predeceased by her father, John P. Hughes, II, mother, Ettie Adams Jones Hughes and older sister, Polly Hughes Weathers.

Sallie graduated from Lynchburg city public schools, attended Stevens Junior College in Missouri for two years and then finished her last two years at Westhampton College in Richmond, VA. Early in life she had a penchant for acting and even considered making it a career. She went to New York in her young adult life to try for Broadway but then decided against it. She came back to Lynchburg, attended Lynchburg College for a degree in education and taught English at E.C. Glass High School. Through her acting skills she brought English literature, especially Shakespeare, to life for her students. Many remember her for her poetry and her love of music and the arts.

 She never married and was devoted to her family, living in the old home place caring for her parents until they died. She is survived by her brothers, John P. Hughes, III and Holcombe A. J. Hughes, Sr., his wife, Pat Griffin Hughes, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

 There will be a graveside service conducted at the Presbyterian Cemetery on Grace Street in Lynchburg at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2011. A visitation will be held at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on Friday, November 18, 2011.
