Sampson (Dickie Lee) Wooldridge Cawthorne, 75, of Lynchburg, VA, died Friday, December 17, 2010.
Mr. Cawthorne was born Monday, September 9, 1935, in Appomattox, VA, a son of the late James Daniel Cawthorne and Annie Abbitt Wooldridge Cawthorne. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was retired from U.S. Postal Service where he was a letter carrier. He was a member of College Hill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his son, Duncan Brice Cawthorne and wife, Kathleen, of Rustburg; his step-son, William David Heflin of Evington; three sisters, Mary Sale, Doris Johnson and Helen Duff; three brothers, Leo Cawthorne, Allen (Pete) Cawthorne and Norman (Punk) Cawthorne; his grandchildren, Collin, Cindy and Claire Cawthorne; and his dear friends, Ronald Hienkle and wife, Beth, of Lynchburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters and five brothers.
A celebration of Sampson's life will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, December 19, 2010, at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory with the Rev. Carl Weiser officiating. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 16. The family will receive friends following the service.
