Samuel A Hedrick\"¦ dreamer, business owner, marketer, music promoter, philosopher, self-appointed preacher\"¦ husband, father, grandfather\"¦ but above all, friend.
Sam was affectionately known as \"The Winshare\" man for more than 15 years at the GE/Ericsson plant on Mountain View Road, now part of Liberty University. Sam started the \"Dreamers,\" a group of employees that were instrumental in keeping the factory going in the late 1980\"™s and the 1990\"™s. After several years of defying the odds\"¦ after several years of employee ideas saving the company millions of dollars\"¦ a training company did a documentary video on Winshare.
In the promotional material they wrote, \"Among the success stories of empowerment and employee involvement, few are as dramatic and inspiring as that of the Ericsson G.E. Mobile Communications plant in Lynchburg, Virginia. This video demonstrates how an employee involvement program transformed a company.\"
Inspirational is the perfect way to describe how Sammy transformed thousands of people he shepherded and encouraged over the years. One of his favorite ways to describe how Winshare worked, to more than 500 companies who visited the plant, was a quote from an hourly factory employee, \"For 30 years you paid for my hands and you could have had my mind for free.\"
Sam was a free spirit, an ageless hippy, a person who would do just about anything for a friend \"" always thinking how he could help people. He was a music lover from a young age, attended more concerts than he could remember and owned The Night Gallery for 11 years.
Sam was also a car nut, a real automobile enthusiast. He owned numerous cars throughout his life that ranged from a beat up VW bug that used a coat hanger to pull the gas pedal up, to a custom-painted 69 Corvette Stingray that he won awards with at car shows.
Sam is survived by his wife Donna Lynn Mayberry and two daughters Cindy Hedrick Shoemaker (Paul) and Beth Hedrick Boyer (R. F.), brother, Edward Arthur Hedrick (Kaye), and grandchildren Caitlin, Kirsten, and Ian Shoemaker and Madison, Mackenzie and Matthew Boyer.
In his own way, Sam saved many souls and counseled hundreds if not thousands of friends he made through the years. As we recall our time with Samuel A. Hedrick, these words ring true\"¦ our lives were richer, our hearts were lighter, we were blessed for having known him.
A visitation will be held Thursday, November 8, 2012, at 6:30 P.M. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A celebration of Sam\"™s life will follow at 7:30 P.M. with Rev. Msgr. J. Kenneth Rush officiating.
