Samuel D. Trent, 83, of Red House Rd., Gladys, passed away on Thursday, October 10, 2024. He was the loving husband of Bobbie Trent for 63 years.
Born in Campbell County, VA, on April 20, 1941, he was a son of the late Garland Hardrick Trent and Nancy Hunter Trent. He was also preceded in death by his son, Brian Trent; a brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Jean Trent; a brother-in-law, Ben Driskill and a nephew, Garland Trent, Jr.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Phil Trent (Wanda) of Gladys; granddaughters, Lori King (Nick) of Largo, Florida and Kristen Pfohl (Curtis) of North Chesterfield; two great-grandsons, Colin Pfohl and baby Pfohl, due in November; two sisters, Laura T. Roberts (Gerald) of Mechanicsville and his twin sister, Sarah T. Driskill of Rustburg; three brothers-in-law, Ron Pack (Allene) of Rustburg, Don Pack (Boo) of Roanoke, and Sam Pack (Vege) of Keysville; and one sister-in-law, Jane Evans (Rex) of Poquoson; and numerous nieces and nephews, whom he loved very much; and numerous cousins and friends. The family would also like to thank Visiting Angels, especially Carol Rowland.
Samuel was a self-employed dairy farmer and retired from the Timken Company, Altavista. Samuel served his country in the Army National Guard and was a lifelong member of New Bethel Church. He was a master of many crafts. He was talented in his abilities and skill set. If it was a farm, garden or tractor question, he was the one to ask. Welding, mechanics and last frost dates would have been easy knowledge for him to impart. Sports schedules and stats would have made for easy conversation with him. He knew which hymns were most appropriate for the event at hand and could tell you in which hymnal they were found.
His knowledge base was broad because his joy in these things knew no bounds. He was an expert at working the earth and the machines that helped, because he loved it. The smell of fresh dirt, a freshly mowed yard, the glow of an orange sunset, and the rumble of a tractor brought peace and light to his life. His ear for music was sharp because his desire to create it was great. The turning of the pages in a hymnal, the counting of when to begin singing, and the release of letting his rich voice break into song filled his soul. He loved singing in church.
As much joy as all the above brought him, nothing compared to his love of family. Great-grandfather, grandfather, father, husband, brother, son, uncle, cousin, and friend are titles that he held dearest. Farmer, gardener, soloist, and sportsman could all describe him, but he cherished being a family man most of all.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Bethel Church, C/O Karen Albert, 54 Memory Lane, Rustburg, VA 24588.
