Sandra Lee Humphries

Sandra Lee Humphries, 68, of Lynchburg, went to be with her Lord on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born June 14, 1941, in Goodwill, W.Va., she was the wife of James E. Humphries and the daughter of the late Oscar W. Jones and Mary E. Jones. Sandy was a faithful member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and enjoyed meetings and fellowship with her women's circle, The Ladies of Charity.

Sandy graduated from Stoco High School at the age of 17 and moved to Washington, D.C., where she was recruited to work for the CIA. In 1960, she married the love of her life, Jimmy, and would have celebrated their 50th anniversary on Oct. 21 of this year. Sandy left the CIA and worked for the Construction Specifications Institute until she retired in 1994.

Sandy is survived by her husband, James E. Humphries; one daughter, Dawn H. Gordon, and son-in-law, James M. Gordon; and three grandsons, Daniel S. Short, Ian M. Gordon and Duncan E. Gordon. She also leaves behind loving brothers, Jimmy Jones and family from Blacksburg, Va., Joe Jones and family from Hagerstown, Md., and Charlie Jones and wife from Orange County, Fla.

The family would like to thank the physicians and staff of the Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center and the Centra Hospice nurses for the compassionate care given during her illness.

Funeral services for family and close friends will be provided by Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory. Arrangements to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you make donations to the Greater Lynchburg SPCA.
