Sandra “Sandy” Persons Young died peacefully at home. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, she graduated from Lynchburg College and never left the area. She is survived by her first cousin, Janice Persons Biggers, of Columbus, Georgia. She was predeceased by her parents, Frances Bowden Persons and John Knox Persons, her first cousin, Truman Capote, and dear friend, Elizabeth Bischoff.
Sandy loved many things in life. She loved being a teacher, and touched countless lives at Dearington and Linkhorne Elementary Schools. She loved the Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals. She loved fishing at the edge of the ocean. She loved crossword puzzles and good books. She loved people and surrounded herself with friends who became family. She loved her Savior, Jesus Christ, and worked to serve him. She was a member and ordained elder of Rustburg Presbyterian Church. She championed the rights of others, marching in Selma, and befriending death row inmates. She served faithfully with Kairos prison ministry for the last twenty years of her life. She loved generously, accepting each person as a Child of God. She is survived by many who love her. Special friends include Revs. Louann and Roger Moore, Benita and Charles Ripley, Linda and Bob Conley, Ruth Syre, Mary Ann Bischoff and Brian Kuehnapfel, and Paul Bischoff.
A service of celebration and thanksgiving will be held Saturday, April 23, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, officiated by Rev. Louann Moore. Please wear brightly colored clothes. De Colores!
