Sarah Finlayson Toy died peacefully Thursday, October 31 in Drinkard Health Care Center at Westminster Canterbury Retirement Center in Lynchburg, Virginia.
She was the last surviving child of Henry George and Jean Warden Finlayson. Robert Murray Finlayson, her brother, and Janet Finlayson Holley, her sister, predeceased her. She is survived by a daughter, Alice Toy Morgan, and her husband, Steven W. Morgan, of Bristol, TN and their daughters: Sarah Grace Sievel and Amy Laura Morgan. A host of nieces and nephews survive her as well.
Sarah was born May 12, 1918 in North Adams, MA. Her father was the eldest of five brothers who emigrated from Thurso, Scotland. Her mother was Jean Warden of Springfield, MA.
Sarah graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy, NY, in 1940. She found employment at DiPinna\"™s, an upscale department store in New York City and Miami, FL. Later, she joined the Navy in WWII and ran the Rations Board in Norfolk, VA.
After WWII, she and Alice moved to Central Florida to be close to her parents and to begin her long teaching career. After retirement, she moved to Lynchburg, VA where she enjoyed living in the Westminster Canterbury Retirement Center until her death.
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Canterbury, in the chapel on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 2:00 PM, with a reception to follow.
