Sarah Miller \”Œsally\” Silk

Sarah Miller Silk, 89, of Forest, died Saturday, May 29, 2010.  Born in Brooklyn, NY, July 15, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Rose Smith Miller and Francis X. Miller.  Her husband, Edmond J. Silk, and her sister Rose M. Shields also preceded her in death.

Sally was a 1942 chemistry graduate from St. Josephs College for Women, Brooklyn, NY.  As a chemical engineer on the Manhattan Project, she participated in work essential to the production of the atomic bomb.  Sally and her husband later settled in Lynchburg where Ed worked for Babcock and Wilcox. After raising her family, she taught at Seven Hills School, eventually receiving her Masters in Science from Randolph-Macon Women\"™s College in 1972.

A member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, she loved singing in the choir for many years.  She also enjoyed traveling, playing golf and bridge with her friends.

Sally is survived by her children Joan Tichacek and Richard Silk, both of Lynchburg, and Barbara Magaddino and her husband Joseph, of Santa Ana, CA; seven grandchildren, Robert Tichacek, Jr., Amanda Tichacek, Catherine (Justin) Sibiski, Peter (Nicole) Magaddino, Katharine (Christopher) Reese, Sarah (Andrew) Kuhlman, Michael Magaddino; one great-granddaughter, Olivia Sibiski; four nieces, Carol Kelly, Rosemary Shields, Janet (James) McCroskery, Marguerite (Randy) Roussine; two nephews, Charles (Debbie) Shields, and Francis (Nancy) Shields.

The family thanks the staff of Valley View Assisted Living for the love and care they gave Sally. They helped fill her days with companionship and fun.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 1 pm, June 3, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.  Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 3015 Roundelay  Rd, Lynchburg, VA 24502.
