Scott J. Slaughter, 70, departed this life suddenly on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Scott, also affectionately known as “Joe” by family and friends, was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. He owned and operated an excavation business after retiring from Big Island Paper Mill. Joe loved spending time with his granddaughters, deer hunting, farming, and all things mechanical.
Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Mable A. Slaughter. He is survived by his son, Isaac “Ike” Slaughter of Murrysville, Pa.; two granddaughters, Kelli and Kasi Slaughter, also of Murrysville, Pa. and their mother, Estelle Slaughter of Lynchburg; three brothers, Alford (Cynthia) Slaughter, Roy Slaughter, both of Forest, and Ray (Nomkhosi) Slaughter of Fayetteville, N.C.; three sisters, Juliann Edwards, Linda Christian, both of Madison Heights, and Jeanette (Gary) McQueen of Richmond, Va.; one aunt, Mrs. Joesephine Miller of Lynchburg; one uncle, Mr. James Coleman; a devoted cousin, Ms. Peggy Coleman of Shannon, N.C.; two devoted friends, Timothy Jackson and Jim Barrett; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A celebration of Joe’s life will be held Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at Altha Grove Baptist Church in Forest, Va. Interment will follow in Altha Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. A repast will take place in the church fellowship hall following the interment.
