Selene Carson Stewart, 88, of Lynchburg, went to be with her Lord, Friday, November 4, 2016. She was the loving wife of the late Dr. Thomas Woodruff Stewart.
Born January 8, 1928 in Roanoke, VA, Selene was a daughter of the late Leslie Dillard Carson and the late Annie Templeton Carson. Selene attended Rustburg and E.C. Glass High Schools. She earned her nursing degree from Knoxville General Hospital School of Nursing and continued her education post-graduation at Johns Hopkins University.
On June 26, 1954, Selene and Thomas were married at Court Street United Methodist Church, where they were members. Selene was an operating room supervisor at several Lynchburg hospitals during her career as a nurse. She volunteered with the American Red Cross for 45 years, volunteered with the Methodist Red Bird Mission in Kentucky for 15 years, and was a volunteer chaplain with Industrial and Commercial Ministries for 15 years. In addition, she took mission trips to Mexico and Russia, and volunteered with Little Lambs Inc., a prison ministry in Florida. She was a certified lay speaker with the United Methodist Church.
Left to cherish her memory are daughter, Martha Stewart Doolittle, of Austin, TX; sons, William Carson Stewart and wife Carol Welstead Stewart of Glen Allen, VA, and Robert Hall Stewart and wife Cleo Sander Stewart of Holly Springs, NC; grandchildren, Laura Stewart Doolittle of Austin, TX, John Thomas Stewart, Amy Elizabeth Stewart, William Andrew Stewart, Sarah Virginia Stewart, of Glen Allen, VA, Christopher Alan Stewart, of Holly Springs, NC; sister, Gaile C. Hensley and husband, Wallace; brother, Franklin D. Carson and wife, Grace; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Thomas W. Stewart, Jr.; brothers, Raleigh A. Carson and wife, Violet Arthur; Milton D. Carson and wife, Kathleen Costello.
A celebration of Selene’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Court Street United Methodist Church, Lynchburg, VA, with Pastor William Burleigh officiating.
