Allie “Selene” Crews Routon, 91, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Lynchburg, peacefully went to be with her Lord on Friday, May 11, 2018. Selene was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many.
Selene was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on September 23, 1926 to the late Marvin W. Crews and the late Clarice H. Crews. She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Harry S. Routon, Jr.; brother Marvin W. Crews; sisters Patsy B. Crews, Elizabeth C. (Betty) Hubbard, Clarice C. (Polly) Shumate, Jane C. Fuller, and Dora C. Eubank. She is survived by her only child, Laurie T. Serra and her husband, Mark, of Clearwater, Fla.; her grandchildren Michael D. Tibbetts and his wife, Rebecca, of Ft. Myers, Fla., Emily T. Allenbach and her husband, Mark, of Atlanta, Ga., and Jessica T. Buchanan and her husband, David, of Alexandria, Va.; her great-granddaughters Lily, Caroline, Madeline, Lydia, Parker, Sadie, and Paige Selene; her brothers William F. (Dick) Crews and his wife, Mary, of Midlothian, Va., and Dayton L. (Butch) Crews and his wife, Rosie, of Burke, Va.; and many nieces and nephews.
Selene was born and raised in Lynchburg (E.C. Glass Class of 1944) and was extremely proud of her Virginia roots. She attended the former Memorial Methodist Church where she met her husband Harry. They moved to Jacksonville, Fla. in 1959, returning to Lynchburg after they retired in 1987. She returned to Florida in 2011 to be close to her daughter, Laurie.
Selene suffered her first stroke in 2012 and as a result, received wonderful, loving care from the staff at Stratford Court in Palm Harbor, Florida over the last 5 ½ years. Her extended family, including her brothers and their wives, many nieces and nephews, and lifelong Virginia friends, never forgot her, visiting her in Florida, sending many cards and letters, and phone calls offering love and encouragement both to her and her daughter, Laurie. These acts of kindness have been greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten.
The family will receive friends and family from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 17 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, followed by a celebration of Selene’s life at 11:00 a.m. in the Tharp Chapel with Pastor Bill Burleigh officiating. The family requests that all attending wear their favorite bright color in celebration of Selene’s life. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family invites all family and friends to join them for lunch at Charley’s Restaurant (Selene’s favorite!) on Graves Mill Road, Lynchburg, after the interment.
