Sgt. “A.W.” Rush

Retired Virginia State Police Sgt., Aubrey Wallace \"A.W.\" Rush, 81, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013. Born October 26, 1931 in Lynchburg, VA; he was a son of the late Aubrey Watkins Rush and Mary Collins Rush.

Rush, as he was known by family and friends, was also preceded in death by a brother, William \"Bill\" Rush; sister, Genevieve R. Marshall; and a niece, Susan Marshall Pickrel.

Rush was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Rush was dedicated to his career in law enforcement as a Virginia State Police Trooper for 42 years. In his VPS Trooper career; he was honored to be in charge of the first K-9 unit. He was a member of the Virginia State Police Association and Alumni and the American Legion Board-Canady Post 54 in Bedford. Following retirement, Rush worked with his friends at Piedmont Metal Products.

Rush is survived by his loving wife of 46 1/2 years, Marilyn Neas Rush; son, Steve Rush and wife, Judy of Bedford; daughter, Elizabeth Leigh Turner of Lynchburg; children by marriage, Dennis C. Burks and wife, Jeannie of Bel Alton, MD, and Denise Mignogna and husband Gary of Lynchburg; grandchildren, Allison W. Rush, Jennifer L. Rush, Brittney Burks Dixon and husband, Marcus, Bethany N. Burks, Kristen M. Mignogna, Benjamin C. Mignogna; brothers-in-law, Odell Neas, Wayne Neas; and a host of friends, neighbors, and extended family.

A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 AM, Friday, June 28, 2013 in Tharp Funeral Chapel, Bedford, with Rev. Dr. H.O. Tom Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
