Sharon Butterbaugh Schwartz, 74, of Madison Heights, Virginia went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 4, 2022. She was the beloved wife of David Charles Schwartz for 43 years and the daughter of the late Paul Butterbaugh, Sr., and Dorothea (Smith) Butterbaugh.
Sharon was born on June 21, 1948, in Osaka, Japan (where her father was stationed). She earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Georgia College as well as beginning work towards a Doctorate degree. She taught at Bridgewater College and Liberty University before homeschooling her three children and finished her teaching career at Temple Christian School.
Sharon had been a member of Grace Baptist Church in Madison Heights, VA for many years. She was actively involved in teaching Sunday school, children’s church and women’s Bible studies. Sharon also helped organize a collective group of ladies at Grace who made baby quilts for the Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center. Sharon and David along with a Korean pastor founded a Korean-speaking Baptist church in Roanoke, VA. After 9 years of service the church became independent and is still active to this day. Operation Christmas Child was a year-round ministry for Sharon; it was her delight to spend her time, talents, and energy on filling shoeboxes, which encompassed her passion for both children and overseas missions. Sharon, with help from a faithful few, packed well over 5,000 shoeboxes which have gone out to impact countless lives around the world.
In addition to her husband, Sharon is survived by her children: Christine Daubert & husband Michael, Jonathan Schwartz & wife Amy, and Amy Schroeder & husband Bryan; 5 grandchildren and 14 foster grandchildren; her siblings Peggy Brooks and Paul Butterbaugh, Jr.; as well as many other loving family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 8, 2022, at 6pm at Temple Baptist Church in Madison Heights, VA with John Pickett officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Samaritan’s Purse for Operation Christmas Child in her honor.
Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg is assisting the family.
