Sherman Hunter Pierce age 95 passed away on December 7, 2016 in Farmville, VA. He was born on October 31, 1921 in Bedford County, VA.
He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U. S. Navy. He subsequently began a career in the Newport News Shipyard, Newport News, VA, where he retired in 1987 as an inspector. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Bedford, VA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Carter Pierce; his parents, Robert Spencer Pierce and Carrie Updike Pierce; his brothers Nelford Pierce, Homer Pierce, John Pierce and Hugh Pierce; his sisters Eula Pierce, Frances Lynch and Helen Farris. He is survived by his children Alexander Hunter Pierce and his wife Brenda of Scottsville, VA; Roslyn Bumpus of Anchorage, AK; Joyce Nuttall and her husband, Harry, of Gloucester, VA; Gloria Simmons of Waynesboro, VA; and Bryan Spencer Pierce of Grafton, VA. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Bedford Life Saving Crew, P. O. Box 161, Bedford, VA 24523. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory in Bedford. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with military honors.
