Sherry Elaine Herbert

d. June 23, 2016

Sherry Elaine Williams Herbert of Lynchburg went home to the Lord Thursday, June 23rd, after a brief illness. Sherry was a gifted and celebrated Montessori educator whose career spanned over four decades. She graduated from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a graduate degree in Educational Administration. In 1981, she earned the first of two Montessori teacher certifications under the direction of Dr. Elizabeth Caspari, the last surviving teacher trained by Dr. Maria Montessori. After starting her teaching career at Children’s Montessori School in Brunswick, Georgia, she rose to become the school’s headmistress. She then redirected her interests in children’s welfare by taking a position as a consultant/trainer for the Georgians for Child Abuse Prevention agency. Her work in child abuse, prevention, and advocacy continued with a similar position for the Virginians for the Prevention of Child Abuse in Richmond, VA.

In the early 1990s she helped establish the first public Montessori school in North Carolina for the Charlotte -Mecklenburg School System. While serving as a Primary teacher she, along with several other teachers, founded the Montessori Teacher Education at Charlotte.

While teaching in the Charlotte school system, she was introduced to the Montessori based Catechesis of the Good Shepard children’s spiritual formation concept. She trained for all three levels of the Atria, mastering the material to teach three year olds through the fifth grade. She first established the Catechesis program at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter. She then began working part-time for St. Martin’s Episcopal Church to establish their Catechesis program. She carried her talents with her to Lynchburg and joined the existing Catechesis program at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

After 23 years of teaching at Amay James Montessori School/Park Road Montessori School, she retired in 2014 to relocate with her husband and son to Lynchburg. She continued her Montessori teaching by working part-time for an additional year and a half at Montessori Children’s House.

She had a special talent for creating artistic quilts. She gifted many family members and friends with her creations. She joined the local Patches ‘n Pieces quilting group and enjoyed the many projects in which she engaged. Many of her cherished creations were the result of special weekends at the mountain house in North Carolina with her quilting friends.

Sherry was born in Burke County, North Carolina. She is the daughter of Clara B. Williams and the late Ralph H. Williams. She is survived by her husband, Lee C. Herbert of Lynchburg, sister Diane W. Warner of Shelby, NC, sister Judy W. Giarla of Harrisburg, NC, brother Ralph H. Williams, Jr. of Charlotte, NC, daughter Evelyn Page of Gastonia, NC, sons Christopher Herbert and Jessie Herbert, both of Charlotte, NC, son David Herbert of the house, and many nieces and nephews.

A service celebrating the life of Ms. Sherry will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Lynchburg on Saturday, July 2nd at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Virginia Episcopal School’s Endowment or to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Endowment Fund.  A reception in the church Undercroft will follow the celebration.
