Shimen Baer Zudekoff

Shimen (Shim) Baer Zudekoff passed away on December 26, 2011 at 76 years of age. He was born on September 11, 1935, the son of the late Joseph Zudekoff and Eva Gandelman.

Shim attended Yale University and Yale School of Law, graduating as Doctor of Jurisprudence. He served variously as legal consultant, human resources director and salesman for City Printing Co. in North Haven, CT. After marriage to Ann (nee Pulik) Zudekoff in February of 1986, he worked together with her to establish an innovative digital printing firm in New Haven.

Always ready to venture into unfamiliar paths and pursue bold ideas, he and Ann retired and relocated to Huddleston, VA in 1998 where they erected a modest homestead and eagerly gave up their \"type-A\" Yankee lifestyles for a leisurely, but no less intense, passion for their new home. Turning a few acres of bare red clay into a riot of colors and living textures with flowers, shrubs, trees and vegetables, all populated and suffused with the peaceful humming and occasional swarm of honey bees. As a Master Gardener and beekeeper, Shim pursued the quiet joys of his newly-found endeavors with the same passion and intensity which marked the rest of this remarkable man\"™s too-short life. He is survived by his wife Ann, his son Roger, granddaughter Madelyn Joy, and daughter Debra, Dallas, TX.

Shim's wishes were to be cremated, and he did not want any kind of service. I of course, respected his wishes, but felt that there was something missing, as a number of friends asked me about plans to celebrate his life.

Still, I did not want a typical "canned" service –  that is S-O-O-O-O NOT Shim!

I want to do something personal and special to celebrate his life. We already planned that his ashes (they call them \"cremains\" …. can you believe?  Sounds like dried cranberries) are to be scattered in our garden, to help sustain and nourish the fruits of the land he so loved.

Winter has just begun to bear down upon us with falling temperatures, but because everything in the universe has a delicate balance, the daylight hours are also already waxing. Dormant life will slowly resume, and perhaps I too will begin to emerge on the other side of the winter of my grief.

Somewhere close to the vernal equinox, when the buds are swelling, the early flowers are blooming, and the bees are dreaming of swarming, (and, of course, the weather permitting) I will plant at least one \"Franklin Tree\" Franklinia alatamaha in Shim's honor. (His favorite tree, & alas, because life is always too short, we never got around to planting any.)

If you would like to participate in the celebration of Shim\"™s life, please save the tentative date and contact me.

Thanks, blessings, & love

AnnZ
