Shirley Brooks Mitchell

Shirley Brooks Mitchell of Midlothian, Va. departed this life March 15, 2017. She was raised in Lynchburg, Va. and a graduate of E.C. Glass High School. Shirley retired from a forty year career with Barker and Jennings as the administrative assistant to Mr. Barker, himself. She was a devoted member of Memorial Christian Church in Lynchburg and actively participated in Relay for Life for many years. She truly loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who called her “Grandma Shirley”. Shirley loved to knit and made sweaters for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Mitchell; and her two brothers, Clyde Brooks and William “Billy” Brooks. She is survived by her sister, Frances Moore; her two children, Deborah Brewer and Barry Mitchell (Betty); four grandchildren, Tyler Brewer (Terra), Shannon Mitchell, Matthew Brewer (Kortney), and Erin McGarity (Mark); eight great-grandchildren Luci Chiavaroli; Paxton, Layton, and Nathan Brewer; Lincoln and Stella Brewer; Sadie and Foster McGarity; and eight nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18, 2017. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Relay for Life.
