Shirley Broughman Lodge

Shirley Edna Broughman Lodge, 97, of Bedford, died Friday, February 22, 2013, in Bedford. Born June 5, 1915, on Short Hill in Botetourt County, she was the daughter of the late Cottie Houston Smith Broughman and Ryan Hart Broughman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Claude Alexander Coffey and Wayland Benjamin Lodge; four brothers, Cedric Broughman, Robert Edwards, Thomas Edwards and Frank Edwards; and a sister, Dillis Edwards Stokart.

Shirley was the oldest living member of Thaxton Baptist Church. As a young woman, she was employed at \"The Silk Mill\" in Bedford and retired from Rubatex with 28 years of service. She was a nature lover and a collector of Native American artifacts. She proudly voted Democratic in every presidential election, including 2012, except for once when she voted for wartime General, Dwight D. Eisenhower.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda Coffey Crunkleton of Bedford; a son, Dannie A. Coffey of Big Island; a stepson, Randy Lodge and wife, Betty, of Bedford; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a sister, Edith Lugar of Thaxton; a brother Roderic Edwards of Bedford; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, February 25, 2013, from 12 to 1 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home. A celebration of Shirley\"™s life will take place at 1 p.m. in the Tharp Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Randy C. Krantz officiating. Interment will follow in Thaxton Baptist Church Cemetery.
