Shirley Eggleston “Ma” Peters went home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 23, 2015.
Shirley was born in Madison Heights on July 11, 1930 to George and Mae Eggleston. She was preceded in death by her brothers, George Eggleston, Jr., and Roy Eggleston; and her oldest daughter, Cindy P. Combes. She is survived by her daughter, Jaclyn S. Mitchell and husband, Douglas Mitchell; son-in-law, Robert T. Combes; grandsons, Vincent B. Combes, Bradley T. Combes and wife, Sherry C. Combes; great-grandsons, Evan T. Combes and Caden J. Combes; sister, Betty Jo Brooks; sisters-in-law, Barbara Eggleston and June Eggleston; extended family members, Shelia B. Combes and Barbara C. Williamson.
Shirley lived an extraordinary, yet modest, and mostly anonymous life. She leaves behind a legacy of selfless caregiving and advocacy for children. As a house parent at the Presbyterian Home, she was a mentor and mother figure to over 200 young girls. She was also a dedicated mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, foster mother, and a friend to children in life and death.
The family will receive friends today, Saturday, April 25, 2015 from 6 – 8 PM at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg.
In lieu of flowers, Shirley requested donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
