Shirley Floyd Gowen, of Madison Heights died Wednesday, May 24, 2017. She was the devoted wife of Thomas Franklin Gowen for 56 years.
Born June 16, 1937, in Amherst County, Shirley was a daughter of the late William Elton Floyd and the late Eunice Jennings Floyd.
In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her son, Steve Kendall Gowen.
Shirley is survived by her daughter-in-law, Glenda Gowen-Nixon and her husband, Alan, of Elon; three grandchildren, Nicholas, Justin, and Olivia; two sisters, Madeline Mawyer, of Amherst, and Elsie Jessie, of Lynchburg; three brothers, Cecil Floyd and his wife, Eloise, of Lynchburg, James Floyd and his wife, Lillian, of Monroe, and Leroy Floyd, of Madison Heights; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Monroe, having served as treasurer there. She was retired from Nations Bank, where she worked for 42 years.
The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2017, at First Baptist Church of Monroe. A Celebration of Shirley’s life will follow at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Monroe with Pastor Glynn Coleman officiating. Interment will follow at Briarwood Memorial.
