Shirley Slaughter Embrey, 89, of Lynchburg died April 11, 2015 at Heritage Green.
She was born in Lynchburg on November 4, 1925 to the late Marcellus L. Slaughter and Helen Thomson Slaughter. She was also predeceased by her husband, Nelson Embrey, and her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Wilson Mitchell.
She was a 1943 graduate of E. C. Glass High School and a 1947 graduate of Longwood College. She taught mathematics at Brookville and E. C. Glass High Schools and Robert E. Lee Junior High. She was a lifelong member of Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and Bible school and served as President of the women of the church.
She is survived by her sons, David Embrey of Lynchburg and Dr. Richard Embrey and his wife, Rebecca, of Roanoke, Virginia; her grandchildren, Jillian Embrey and her husband, Dan Graber, of St. Louis, Missouri, Jenna Embrey of Brooklyn, New York and Pearce Embrey of Roanoke; her great grandson, Jamie Graber of St. Louis, and her niece, Shirley Snow and her husband, Jim, and their son McLane Snow of Winston Salem, North Carolina.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday April 25, 2015 at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Spring Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Chris Deneen officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church or a charity of choice.
