Sonny Gilbert Smith

Sonny Gilbert Smith, affectionately known as “White”, of Amherst, Virginia, age 75, passed from this life on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Fairmont Crossing Nursing Home. He was born January 11, 1948, in Amherst, Virginia to the late Ed Sandidge and Betty Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and a sister. He was retired from logging. “White” had been working since he was a teen and was a dedicated and faithful employee.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 22 years, Judy Smith (together for 40+ years). He is also survived by his daughters, Patricia Richerson (Brian), Tina Cash, Terri Martin, and Shawna Sandidge; his only son, Lamont Richerson (Tracey), all of Amherst, VA. He also leaves eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. In addition, he leaves four brothers and four sisters and several maternal and paternal siblings. White leaves a host of other family members including sister and brother in laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

White worked as a logger until his illness and loved doing anything outside, especially lawncare. He loved playing card games and listening to his oldies but goodies. Once inside, he was ready to watch his Wheel of Fortune and Walker Texas Ranger.

The family would like to give a big thank you to the staff at Fairmont Crossing for the care that they have given over the last six years.

A funeral service will be held at Tharp funeral Home, 118 Commonwealth Drive, Madison Heights, Va, at 1 p.m. on Monday, October 2, 2023, with Reverend Donald Rucker officiating. Interment following the service at Piney Hill Baptist Church, 320 Slapp Creek Road, Amherst, Va. His remains will lie in state one hour prior to the service. The Family will receive friends at all other times at 218 Jeffrey Loop, Amherst, VA.
