Spencer Monroe Hughes, 98, died on Wednesday, July 20, 2016.
Born on April 23, 1918, in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late John Powell Hughes and Alice Bowling Hughes.
Spencer was retired from Craddock Terry Shoe Corporation, and was the Vice President and a board member of the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center. A member of First Presbyterian Church, he served on the Board of Deacons, The Session, and for fifty years as tenor in the Chancel Choir. He also volunteered at Virginia Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg Department of Social Services, and in the Special Gifts Division of United Way.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Eleanor Krebbs Hughes and Mary Lee Noell Hughes.
Spencer is survived by his two sons, John Powell Hughes, IV and his wife, Deborah, and Bowling Keyes Hughes; his grandson, Edward Miles Hughes and his wife, Morgan Vaughn Hughes; granddaughters, Frances Marie Hughes, and her fiancé, Charles Ottie Tucker, and Michelle Hughes Abrahamson and her husband, Kristofer Paul; and great-grandchildren, Frederick Greyson Hughes and Charlie Elizabeth Hughes.
A graveside service will be conducted at Spring Hill Cemetery at 11 A.M on Wednesday, July 27, 2016.
