Spencer Thomas West, Jr., age 70, of Gladstone, VA, died Sunday, January 9, 2011, at Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg, VA.
Born March 28, 1940 in Memphis, TN, Tommy was the son of the late Mary Virginia Highsmith West and Spencer Thomas West. He was the husband of Anna Jane West for 31 years.
Tommy was preceded in death by his brother in-law, Wilburn Robinson.
In addition to his wife Tommy is survived by his sister Virginia West Robinson, of Campbell County, two aunts, Elizabeth \"Betsye\" Haddock, of Pensacola Beach, FL, and Ruth West Farr, of Memphis, TN, a niece, Robin Lee Robinson, of Martha\"™s Vineyard, MA, and many cousins.
World War II brought Tommy and his family to Pensacola, Florida. It was there he made friends with Donnie Schecter and George Kirchner, friendships that would last a life time. Tommy also formed a bond with his sister, Virginia, a bond that remained strong and special until his death. Tommy entered the US Navy in 1961. Through 15 duty stations in his 32 years of active duty, he worked his way up from a Seaman First Class to a Lieutenant when he retired. He spent part of the Vietnam War under the South China Sea on a submarine. After he and Jane retired from the military they moved to Amherst County. He loved the rural country side and was able to put down roots and not be forced to move again. He will be remembered as a loving husband and brother. He was a born again Christian, who had a profound love for his God, who he knew in his own quiet way. Jane\"™s Sea Captain and sweetheart is now with his Lord and Savior.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
