Stanley C. Bates “Stan”

Stanley C. Bates, \"Stan,\" was born June 23, 1928, in Harrisburg, PA to Stanley Lewis and Florence Frey Bates. He passed away at his home, with his family by his side, February 12, 2014 of natural causes.

Stan was a graduate of John Harris High School, Harrisburg, PA, class of \"™46 and served in the US Navy. Stan moved to Lynchburg in 1972 and retired from the Lynchburg News and Advance after 22 years.

He is preceded in death by his grandson, Brandon Lewis Bates. He is survived by his ever loving wife of 64 years, Marie Elizabeth Snyder Bates, two sons: Stanley C. Bates II, and Jeffery Ross Bates (Bonnie), two daughters: Lora Marie Eddington (Bill), and Lisa Elaine Geier (Dan); eleven grandchildren: Stanley Bates III, Anthony Bates (Melissa), Lorrisa Wilkerson (Wes), Jason Bates, Joshua Bates (Christy Lynn), Jacob Bates (Kelly), Colton McHaney, Brian Ross, Christopher Geier, Zachary Geier, and James Eddington; and four great-grandchildren.

Stan loved to golf and fish, especially with his good friend, Harold Templeton.

A celebration of Stan's life will be held at 4:00 pm at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg, on Saturday, February 22, 2014, with Rev. Jason C. Stanley officiating.
