Stephen Howard Caldwell, 90, of Lynchburg, died on Friday, October 30, 2015. He was the husband of the late Catherine Fariss Caldwell. Born in Campbell County on November 2, 1924, he was a son of the late Washington Hunter Caldwell, Jr. and the late Mary Willie Bagby Caldwell.
He is survived by two sons, Kenneth Stephen Caldwell and wife, Kathryn of Indianapolis, IN and David West Caldwell and wife, Betty of Richmond; one daughter, Linda Catherine Jennings and husband, Jimmy of Rustburg; four grandchildren, Tawnya Benn and husband, Chris of MI, Danielle Elkins and husband, Andy of VT, James Hunter Caldwell of MA and Leah Caldwell of Richmond; three great-grandchildren, Zoe Benn and Samuel Benn both of MI and Ryland Greer Hughes of Richmond; and one brother Martin Luther “Buck” Caldwell and his wife, Patricia Hall Caldwell. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by one brother, William Hunter Caldwell and his wife, Margaret Carwile Caldwell; and one sister, Marie C. Neighbors and her husband, Benny.
Steve was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church where he often taught Sunday School and was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was a graduate of Rustburg High School and Lynchburg College. He worked as an engineer for Griffin Pipe for over thirty-eight years.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2015 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 2, 2015 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kevin M. Holt officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #16.
